A mouse infestation is harmful to your home, your family, and your health. Mice cause structural damage to your home, creating entries from the outside through your roof or exterior wall. IN the process rodents, will chew wires, drywall, insulation and even furniture – damaging your home. Beyond the damage, mice carry pathogens that can cause a plethora of diseases hantavirus, which if left untreated can be lethal.
Hantavirus is a disease carried by rodents. The best preventive measure for contracting it is mouse infestation prevention. Calling an exterminator is the best start. They will be able to identify the entry points the mouse are using. From there the CDC suggests three steps: seal, trap, clean.
Seal
Seal off any openings that the mice could potentially be entering the home through. From there, examine the inside of the home and close off the inside entrances as well. This will help prevent further damage and disable the rodents from entering the property.
Trap
Set up traps. Putting traps in mouse hotspots to catch them will help eliminate the rest of the mouse problem.
Clean
This is the part you must be the most cautious with. When you clean and encounter mouse feces, it is important to protect yourself. Wear protective gear such as latex gloves, goggles, and masks that cover both your mouth and nose. Without protection, you are potentially exposing yourself to the Hantavirus.
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) begins with muscle aches, fatigue, and a possible fever; headaches, dizziness, and nausea could also be early signs you’ve been infected. After a few days of being infected, symptoms will begin to heighten; tightening in your chest, coughing, and respiratory issues are signs that HPS has progressed. If left untreated the hantavirus can be fatal. If you have come into contact with mice, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
One of the best ways to prevent contact with HPS is by hiring a professional to clean up the infestation. If you must clean up the infestation yourself, be sure to follow the three steps: seal, trap, clean.
