Considering Having Your Employees Clean Blood and Body Fluids?

Business owners, take note: the worst action you can take in the event of a crime scene or accidental death is to assign the job to the on-duty maintenance crew or another employee.

It is illegal to require an employee to clean up blood and bodily fluids without proper certification. Due to the hazardous nature of such work, anyone who does not possess the appropriate training and equipment may contract a communicable disease.

Consider this:

Federal Regulation 29CFR1910.1030 makes it clear: Your employees can only clean up blood, bodily fluids, biohazard, or infectious waste if:

• They have been formally trained in blood borne pathogens.

• You have a written blood borne pathogens plan.

• They have personal protective equipment available.

• They have been offered hepatitis vaccine with a follow up visit.

• You have provided them with proper method to remove, store, and legally dispose of biohazardous waste.

Only after ALL these steps are met, can an employee clean a biohazard scene.
